When the City of Gothenburg decided to replace the old Götaälv Bridge, the contract went to construction companies Skanska and Danish MT Højgaard. CERTEX Denmark, a long-time subcontractor for MTH, was tasked with delivering a total of 16 lifting ropes and 16 pull ropes for the spectacular lift bridge, inaugurated in spring 2021.
“It’s of course special to be part of the work on Gothenburg’s new landmark. Even though it is a relatively small part of the project, we have delivered important components,” says the project manager at CERTEX Gothenburg, who coordinated the delivery and supplier contacts in collaboration with the Danish sister company.
In 2009, the City of Gothenburg decided to replace the old, worn-out Götaälv Bridge from 1939 with a completely new bridge, to be built next to the old one. After the design competition was concluded, it was decided that the new bridge would be a lift bridge with a width of 40 meters and a total length of 1,380 meters, with a section that can be lifted to allow boat traffic underneath. Each of the four pylons houses a 150-ton counterweight. When the counterweights move down, the lift section rises—and this is where CERTEX came in.
“Each pylon contains four VEROPRO 10 ropes, 64 mm in diameter, for lifting the movable section, and beneath the counterweights, four 26 mm VEROPRO 8 steel ropes have been installed,” explains the project manager.
CERTEX has delivered complete, pre-tensioned steel wire ropes equipped with load cells from Gigasense. The load cells allow the digital monitoring of the tension in each individual rope and help track any potential overloading.
On May 9, 2021, the new Hisingsbron was inaugurated for pedestrians, cyclists, cars, and buses. If all goes according to plan, the bridge is expected to be used by the people of Gothenburg for at least the next 120 years. The bridge is opened at least six times per day for boats and ships that require a clearance of more than 12 meters.
For CERTEX, the project was a successful collaboration with the group’s sister companies and suppliers Verope and Gigasense.
