Automated tool takes steel wire rope lubrication to the next level
Our steel wire rope lubrication tool combines deep cleaning and lubrication in one efficient operation. Joakim Hahne, Service Manager at CERTEX, explains how the method saves time and effort, reduces waste, and extends the service life of steel wire ropes by up to 300 percent – all with minimal impact on operations.
How does the tool work?
- When the tool is in use, it scrapes the rope clean of old grease and pushes the residue ahead of it. At the same time, it forces new lubricant deep between the strands, preventing moisture from penetrating. Cleaning and lubrication of the steel wire rope are completed in a single pass, and on the other side the rope comes out looking and performing like new.
What is the main advantage of the method?
- It is far more efficient than traditional manual lubrication. We save time, improve the working environment for our service technicians and drastically reduce the amount of lubricant used. The machine applies exactly the right amount, which means minimal waste – something that is also positive from an environmental perspective.
Which industries benefit most from this method?
- Among others, the infrastructure segment, for example bridges and cranes. Replacing steel wire ropes on bridges is very costly and complex, and manual lubrication is time-consuming and messy. Our solution makes the job much smoother. Because it is so fast and efficient, the impact on operations is very small. We can lubricate up to 2,000 metres per hour during operation.
How does the tool affect the working environment for service technicians?
How does the tool affect the working environment for service technicians?
- There is a risk that exposed steel wires can cause puncture injuries during manual lubrication. Our tool does the job without anyone needing to touch the rope at all. You simply step aside and let the machine work. Physical strain is also reduced because the machine is compact, has few moving parts and weighs only around 10 kilos.
What sets CERTEX apart from other steel wire rope service providers?
- We offer efficient, end-to-end solutions built on extensive experience and strong technical expertise. For example, we can combine lubrication of steel wire ropes with NDT technology (Non-Destructive Testing) – meaning we install a reading unit with a sensor that induces a magnetic field in the steel wire rope. The sensor shows with high precision where internal defects such as wire breaks, corrosion or wear are located and how they affect the rope’s quality and service life. Our in-depth knowledge of steel wire ropes and service makes us unique. For our customers, this translates into increased safety, significant time savings and higher cost efficiency.
